According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under 5, and the second leading cause for children ages 14 and under. 4000 drowning deaths occur each year nationwide.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Drowning is preventable. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance recommend 5 evidence-based prevention measures:

Swim Lessons

The National institutes of Health has shown that participation in formal swimming lessons reduces the risk of childhood drowning by 88%.

Supervision

Focussed and continuous adult supervision is essential whenever children are in or near the water.

Barriers

Fences with self-closing, self-latching gates and other barriers like safety covers and alarms can prevent children from accessing water adult supervision.

Emergency Preparation

Knowing CPR, basic water rescue skills, and having a phone available to call 911 can be the difference between life & death.

Lifejackets

Proper use of Coast Guard-approved lifejackets can protect children and adults on boats and in open water
